Lake Elsinore, Riverside County
Lake Elsinore is the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California, fed by the San Jacinto River and rimmed by the Elsinore Mountains. The founders of the town named it in the 1880s for the Danish castle in Hamlet. The water level rises and falls with the rains, and in the 1950s the lake dried up completely for several years.
